Have you ever wondered what actually happens to your brain when you practise meditation, relaxation or breathing techniques in Chi Kri Yoga classes? Why is it that you are left with deep, heavenly feelings of peace and calmness…even long after you've finished practising the techniques?

Well, research from all over the world - including famous studies conducted recently at Harvard Medical School and Oxford University - have shown that when you practise these techniques, the brain releases lots of natural chemicals that scientifically make you feel more positive and happy

One of the chemicals that is released is Serotonin. Serotonin has a positive effect on our mood by making us feel calmer, less anxious and reducing our tendency to worry. Because of its stress-relieving properties serotonin is excellent for our mental health and overall sense of well-being

Chemicals like Dopamine and Endorphins are also released, and they create a ‘natural high’ – that euphoric buzz you feel when you’re ‘in love’...or just after you’ve been to a Chi Kri class : ) They are also the body’s natural pain-killers, and boost your motivation and energy levels to help you sustain the momentum you need to achieve your positive goals.

The hormone Melatonin is also released and it is responsible for regulating your sleep patterns, therefore, increases in melatonin levels attained through regular practice of relaxation techniques can help you get a better night’s sleep and alleviate common sleep problems like insomnia.

We could go on forever...there are so many ways in which the techniques we practice in Chi Kri, and that you find generally in yoga, have profound positive effects on the brain at a chemical and structural level - and a lot of these effects are the same as those brought about by medication used to treat anxiety and depression (e.g. Prozac). The feelings of relaxation elicited are also similar to those you experience when you drink a glass of wine….or two......

BUT inducing these effects naturally through Chi Kri meditation, relaxation and breathing techniques is a lot safer than both of the cases above. Unlike the hangovers you get from alcohol…or the increased risk of suicide and anxiety that you can get from Prozac medication (yeah we don’t get it either!), Chi Kri techniques do not have any negative side effects when practised after being taught by a qualified Chi Kri teacher. Plus the beneficial effects tend to be more long-lasting....

At Chi Kri we understand that in today’s busy world you do not have the time to sit down and practise techniques for hours. This is why in association with HSBC, we created a CD full of simple yet incredibly effective guided stress management techniques…each of which is designed specifically to help you calm your mind and enter a serene state of just 5 minutes!

The CD is called “I’ve Only Got 5 Minutes” and to get yourself a copy of it all you need to do is click here

Each track on the CD is also available to download individually as an mp3…so you can listen to your favourite technique on your ipod and access those feelings of tranquility wherever you are. To listen to a sample of each track and start downloading your favourite tracks, just click here

So start practising the techniques today, just 5-10 minutes a day (that's 0.7% of your day!) to begin with, it's a great start!

In peace,

Sheena and Chi Kri
